Walking around Siem Reap can be a rewarding experience as there are little treasures hiding in small streets - the market has a wealth of bric-a-brac for the souvenir hunter while the surrounding streets have a huge number of local family run restaurants to allow you to delve into the local Khmer quisine, which is both delicious and cheap ($3 a plate)…
A Café worthy of visiting is the ‘Singing tree café’, which is now called the ‘Peace Café’ and offers the same Yoga classes and brewed coffee in a relaxed garden full of prayer flags and wicker chairs with deep padded cushions :)
Siem Reap is in the throws of major developments including the new Angkor wat museum ($12 entry) which although impressive is over priced for what you get and the mall advertised as catering for all your needs is in fact newly built and empty except for one restaurant… Other new developments show a clear western influence with shopping malls beginning to appear on the NH6 highway along with a number of upmarket hotels as more tourists choose to visit Angkor Wat now that Cambodia is seen as a safe destination and many tourists demand comfort and spas!!
