Onwards to Ella

The next leg of the journey took my driver and I through some stunning landscape dotted with waterfalls of all sizes and mountains covered in farm terraces and tropical rain forest. The scenery was just beautiful and pictures cannot do it justice.
We were on the road to Ella 80km away along tiny mountain roads which wound around hairpin bends with vertical drops one side and sheer walls the other, we swept through changing landscapes of tea plantations, new hydro-electric power plants, resettlement projects, old villages and vegetable terraces.
On route to Ella my driver reminded me that he had somewhere special to show me and this was the ‘Hunters Club’ set up by the plantation owners - Well it was like little colonial England. The gardens outside were perfectly maintained with well trimmed lawns, bushes and perfectly placed flower beds. The façade of the building was impressive with powerful stonework overrun with vines and as you stepped in you were greeted and offered temporary membership of the club… Hell yes!! It was sumptuous with large comfortable sofas set around a fireplace with pictures of the queen and prince Phillip above the mantel and stuffed deer heads along the walls (Not to everyones taste but added to colonial atmosphere). This idyllic location was a perfect rest point to consume a light lunch and have a glass of wine, well deserved after the physical exertion of the morning :) Overall a great day.
Hotel in Ella - a little disappointing (lots of mozzies, sweltering heat and no fan!!), on the positive side the food is plentiful and good...
Am heading for Mirissa on the South Coast tomorrow - hoping for better there…
