Around town in Rotarua

Mt second and last day in Rotorua meant a walk around town to investigate the FREE options for the traveller. First up the Library to update the blog (not free, but only $3 for the whole day)… Then to ‘The Lone Star’ bakery which sells succulent hot pies from veggie to full on meat feasts all for less then $4 each!! Taking lunch to the lake I pass one of the many classic motors that seem popular here… The lakefront is the home to an enormous number of seagulls who will mob around you if they see any weakness ;) So aim not to feed them!! The lake is beautiful in the sunlight, reflecting the scenery and scattered clouds. But on the edge of the lake is the evidence for the tourist influence - you can hire a boat, take a scenic flight by sea plane or go on a coffee cruise… none however are free…
Following the lake to the left as you look at it you will soon come to Kuirau park (A geothermal area with lots of active mud pools and hot springs). The landscape has a prehistoric quality - as you walk amongst the withered woodland, bubbling mud and steaming waters you can just let your imagination run riot ;) a great stop for families and best of all its completely FREE and only 5mins walk from the YHA hostel.
Tomorrow I am on a bus all day!! it’s a long haul to Taipai via Auckland (an 8 hour marathon coach journey)…
