Intercity to Kaikoura

Wow - what a journey - the start is through flat countryside but soon enough you are heading between mountains along roads with sweeping bends and passing lanes. But the highlight of this trip is the coastal highway drawing into Kaikoura - Wow… just wow… The road hugs the coastline flanked with mountains on the left and the sea on your right - they mountains seem to descend directly into the surf with boulder strewn outcrops jutting occasionally from the roadside. Beside us the rail line keeps disappearing into the mountainside through every growing tunnels while we speed around the headlands on a road precariously draped onto ribbons of concrete poured over the bedrock itself! A wonderful stretch of road - but, I guess, a little short for a TV appearance ;)
Kaikoura turns out to be a small town with black stony beach, huddle of hardy shops, motels and backpacker hostels. The wind is bracing with surf rolling up the beaches and disturbing the seagulls into flight. The town is overlooked by inviting snow covered peaks - but I resist the temptation to climb them!! Instead it is a 2km walk to the YHA from the central bus stand hefting my 18kilo pack ;)
