Western Beijing on the last day
So much to see and only a day to finish my tour! So it is off along line 1 on the subway to explore the Western edges of the city and to my surprise I find a hidden gem ;) The International Sculpture Park is located one stop after the Military Museum stop and contains as you would expect from the name a large number of international sculptures all spread over two separate parks. They have been created by wonderful imaginations and the Singapore example is a colourful delight - However, the UK entry leaves a little to be desired!! Final stop today was the TV Tower which rises 241m above the streets of Beijing and provides unrivalled views of the city in a 360 degree arc - it is also an opportunity to see the level of pollution shrouding the city as it sits like a brown blanket of smog over everything (at street level this is not visible but from 241m up it is clear to see and creates a horizon line between the blue sky and the cloaked city). So to sum up Beijing it is a city with huge potential which has been realised in many ways by the Chinese government - it has a perfectly adapted transport system that works efficiently to get huge numbers of people around the city, it has large tower blocks to house people while still providing open spaces for them to relax and exercise in, it has shops and restaurants to cater to all budgets and finally has fabulous national and international links. It truly is an international city.
