A trip on the Kandy Express

The train to Kandy from Colombo has 1st Class observation seats ;) So I could not miss this opportunity for a little luxury… The train turned up on time and I lugged my HUGE travel pack onto the overhead compartment to find that I had a window seat no.21 which turned out to be the perfect viewing platform as it had a window, which could be opened!! and cound still see out of the panaramic windows to the front ;)
The Journey would take 3 hours and was along a rail line which was noted as being a little bumpy… Well if bouncing around on an inflatable castle is 'a little bouncy' then that was what it was like at times!! I mean BOUNCY… This aside the journey was visually stunning with a transformation in the landscape from modern city to slums to outer villages to padi fields to mountains. The huge variety in landscape meant that the three hours passed quickly and there was always something else to catch your eye - A granite rock face (inches away!!), farmers working in their terraced rice fields using hand tools, the sun setting over rainforest covered mountains or the shouts of people that we passed on the track. As the train track passed through the mountains and I could only ponder the sheer challenge of building the railway line… It incredibly it passed through hand cut tunnels and held onto the side of sheer mountain drops and gave stunning views of the surrounding mountains. A wonderful introduction to the surroundings of Kandy. (No photos here as camera was out of power... sorry)
Soon I was able to settle into the Comfort Lodge - My hotel for the night :)
