Day three and the cartoon museum...

Union Square is the centre of all things elitist with high end fashion stores competing with jewellery outlets with mesmerising quantities of diamonds and art galleries with bizarre creations to meet all tastes. It is also home to Macy’s which is in turn home to ‘The Cheesecake Factory’ ;) Well, I had to make sure that the quality was the same everywhere so I waited for a window seat on the patio and then had lunch overlooking an art show on Union Square seven floors below. The sun was shining and the wind was at times chilling but the atmosphere was tranquil and Guss my waiter was excellent while I had the company of both pigeons and a massive seagull. Highly recommended.
During the afternoon I wander around the streets off from Mason and Market and soon discover plenty to do in the locality of my hostel. Seems that not only is it cheap but its location means that you are just minutes away from the action in the city centre. Great :)
Within 10 mins walking distance I find an antique carousel (undercover to keep off the rain), ice skating rink, IMAX cinema and several museums, the favourite of which was the cartoon museum on Mission Street - it houses a small but superb display of art which at times had me laughing out loud (check out Berkely Breathed, which was one of the best art displays)!! Brilliant selection of both strips and lone images including several front cover images from the Economist magazine. Well worth the $7 entry fee. Also along Mission street are the Martin Luther King Junior memorial fountain and St Patrick’s church at Yerba Buena Gardens.
Every street I have walked down in San Francisco so far has its own unique look from elegant classical designs to grand gothic facades to modern glass fronted behemoths - a wonderful city to just take time out and walk around. Soak it all in and relax. Magic.
