The final day of the Merry Monarch festival meant a parade around the streets of Hilo - including the downtown area where my hostel is located :)
Starting at 11am the parade worked its way around the crowded streets of downtown led by the king and queen sat on wicker work thrones mounted atop a colourful float. Following the king and queen came seemingly endless marching bands, the mayor and other public figures and wonderfully bedecked floats full of enthusiastic performers of all ages. My favourite aspects of the parade were the sweets thrown to the children (reminded me of the harvest parades in the UK where coins are also distributed) and the show horses - one in particular caught the eye due to its bright mane and perfect dressage movements. Overall, a good show which the locals got fully behind and celebrated in the streets.
